INDGAC 1240C - Coconut Shell Activated Carbon
INDGAC 1240c is one of the highest absorption-rated carbons that we have been able to find. It is also a Food Safe carbon that has been certified under NSF, Halal, Kosher, and it is produced in an ISO (9001:2015) and HACCP-approved factory.
In water treatment applications, the variety of different compounds to be removed from water is immense. We have a wide range of granular and powder grades to deal with a wide range of purification issues. The major objectives in using Granular activated carbon are the removal of taste and odour, including compounds, overall organics, pesticides, detergents, suspended solids, chlorine, etc. Activated carbon is widely used for removal of taste and odour, organic micropollutants etc. in a cost-effective manner.
INDION® GAC-1240C is a coconut shell-based granular activated carbon produced through steam activation at temperatures ranging from 900 C to 1100 C using a rotary kiln process. This activated carbon is versatile and finds application in various processes, including water treatment for both potable and industrial purposes. Its suitability for backwashing makes it ideal for use in demineralized water plants, desalination plants, and even aquariums.
The Product is specified to have a minimum Iodine Number of 1000mg/g. This is how absorption is typically rated. To put this into perspective a budget carbon filter often has a 150mg/g rating; while your typical filter that comes with a filter system has around a 300mg/g rating. This means that this carbon has over 3 times the absorption rating of the carbon found in most filter systems.
However, typically this carbon tests over 1100mg/g and that is the highest that we are aware of on the South African market.
Product Specs:

2026 Test:

In the 2026 test, it had an iodine rating of 1112mg/g, this is exceptional. Note however it has a 4.62% dust rating that means this batch will require more than normal initial flushing to get rid of all the dust.
2024 test:

In the 2024 test, it has an iodine rating of 1122mg/g that is the highest we are aware of on the market. While also having a relatively low dust level of 1.45%
2020 Test:

In 2020, it had an iodine rating of 1100mg/g that is still over 100mg/g higher than its spec and it is the lowest rating test we have seen for this carbon.
Conclusion
Overall, if you're looking for a high-absorption-rating carbon, at the time of writing, this is the best one we know of in the South African market.
