This stage can be made less critical if you have a well-designed system controlling the levels of biological activity in your storage tanks but it is still highly recommended. If however, it wasn’t practical to set up a system at the tanks this stage becomes very critical, this is also the case if you are storing the water for prolonged periods as the risk increases that you will be getting more organic contamination through. Another thing to keep in mind is that unlike with municipal lines rainwater systems doesn’t have anything to prevent biological organisms from growing in the pipes that feed your house, thus adding a system at the point of use can give you a lot more confidence that the water is actually safe to drink. This risk can also be minimized by adding a chlorine dosing system to periodically sterilize the pipe system.
