Since rainwater has a very low mineral content it is very quick to absorb CO2 from the air while stored in a tank. The downside is that this dramatically lowers the pH basically creating acid rainwater in your tank. This water can then become quite corrosive and damage the houses plumbing over time. There are two approaches that you can take to correct this, either add something to the water to increase the pH to a point where the water isn’t corrosive or add something to the water to prevent the pipes from being damaged by the water.
