16 Watt / 448LPH UV Light (UVS-16)
Germicidal Ultraviolet (UV) light is one of the most effective, chemical-free methods for purifying water. It works by exposing water to a specific spectrum of light that inactivates bacteria, viruses, and protozoa.
The stainless steel housing—often called the reaction chamber or UV vessel—is the protective body that houses the UV lamp and quartz sleeve while water flows through it. Beyond simply holding the components together, its material, finish, and design directly impact how efficiently the system purifies water.
The 16-watt Germicidal UV Light has a maximum flow rate of 448 Litres Per Hour (LPH).
How It Works
UV water sterilization relies on UV-C radiation, specifically at a wavelength around 254 nanometers.
Water passes through a chamber containing a specialized UV lamp encased in a protective quartz glass sleeve.
High-energy UV-C rays penetrate the cell walls of microorganisms.
The light disrupts their DNA/RNA, forming pyrimidine dimers that permanently prevent them from replicating.
Because the organisms cannot reproduce, they are rendered non-infectious and harmless.

Benefits of Germicidal UV Lights
- No Chemical Taste or Odor: The UV light does not change the mineral content of a source water in any way. Retaining the base taste and odour of water.
- Broad Spectrum: Germicidal Ultraviolet (UV) Lights are highly effective at neutralizing bacteria and chlorine-resistant parasites like Cryptosporidium and Giardia.
- Fast & Efficient: Inactivates pathogens in seconds without storage tanks or holding times.
Benefits of Stainless Steel UV Lights vs Plastic Type UV Lights
- Maximized UV Reflection: The polished interior acts like a tubular mirror. High reflectivity forces UV-C light rays to bounce repeatedly throughout the chamber, drastically increasing the dosage applied to passing water.
- Structural Durability & Pressure Resistance: Water systems run under continuous line pressure (typically 40–80 PSI, with spikes higher). Stainless steel easily handles fluid pressure without flexing or leaking.
- Material Integrity Under UV Exposure: Standard plastics degrade, become brittle, or leach chemicals when exposed to intense UV-C light over long periods. High-grade stainless steel is completely immune to UV degradation.
Things to keep in mind with Stainless Steel Germicidal UV Lights
- Sediment Pre-Filter (5-Micron): Essential for removing dirt, rust, and suspended particles so microbes cannot "hide" in shadows cast by debris.
- Hardness / Iron Treatment: High mineral content or iron in the water can stain or cloud the quartz sleeve, blocking the UV light.
- The Bulb (Lamp) inside the UV Lights typically has a lifespan of one year and then must be replaced, regardless of the size of the UV Lamp.
- When replacing UV bulbs, remember that the UV bulb is fragile and must be handled with care.
- When replacing the bulb, it is recommended to clean the outside of the quartz sleeve with rubbing alcohol to remove sediment and/or stains on it's surface.
- Keep in mind that as the UV light runs, the bulb will generate heat. If water stands inside of the light for some time, then it will come out warm/hot.
- The UVS-16 UV Light is not recommended for outdoor installations and should be installed indoors only.
- The UV Light's warranty does not cover damage due to power surges or Lightning Strikes. It is strongly recommended that a surge protector be installed before the UV Light to protect the Ballast against Power Surges or Lightning Strikes.
- The UV lights are designed to operate for 24hours a day if you do not want the light to run all the time, then we would suggest installing a timer at the plug point to turn the light on and off as required.
