25 Litre Crystal Sands Filter Vessel

Crystal Sands Media is a glass-based filtration media used for removing sediment, dirt, rust, and other large particles.

The Crystal Sands works very much like standard silica sand, filtering sediment out of the water. However, unlike silica sand which should be replaced every 3 to 5 years, Crystal Sand Filter Media can last up to 10 years.

The smoother surface of the Crystal Sands also means that it is harder for bacteria to grow, which helps to extend the life span of the media.

Please note that the Crystal Sands Filter Vessels will filter to around 100 Micron only, if you require a finer level of sediment/particle filtration then we would recommend looking at some of the alternative filtration options we have available such as Arkal Disc Filters (55/20 Micron), or AFM® Activated Glass Media Vessels, or Bag Filters.

Crystal Sands is Eco-Friendly being made of 100% recycled crushed glass.

Crystal Sands is a perfect mix of grain size to optimize filtration flow and backwash fluidization.

The Crystal Sands Media Comes in 18kg (13l) bags. Two bags of Crystal Sands Media has roughly the sand as one 40kg bag of Silica Sand Media.

    Key Benefits:

    • The backwash is more efficient - Crystal Sands is lighter than silica sand, fluidizing faster, using less time, energy, and water.
    • Safer - Crystal Sands is not susceptible to metal leaching under acidic conditions as it does not contain high levels of heavy metals such as chrome, iron cobalt, and other metals conventionally used to color beer and wine glass bottles.
    • Recycled Materials - Crystal Sands is environmentally friendly, versus the mining of silica sand, relieving landfill sites of waste.
    • Chlorine Consumption is lower - due to fewer secondary chlorine reaction products such as chloramines.
    • Increased water purity and lower turbidity - Crystal Sands has a reduced filtration period (by up to 25%) with an ionically charged and higher surface area than silica sand, collecting debris, and microbial particles as small as 10 microns.
    • Up to 20% saving in weight compared to Silica Sand
    • Longer lasting - Crystal Sands replacement period is well over 10 years. It has a lower propensity to fracture and wear than Silica Sand.
    • Lower incidence of biofilm - Crystal Sands is not Susceptible to bacterial colonization.

Crystal Sand Filter Vessel Normal Operation and Backwashing

During Normal, operation water flows into the top of the vessel and travels all the way to the bottom of the vessel. As the water flows down through the vessel, all the particles, rust, dirt, mud, and other sediment is captured between the filter sand granules. The water then enters the bottom strainer, flows up the riser pipe, and out the top of the vessel.

    Valve Head Options

    Manual Valve Head

    • Does not require any power.
    • Backwashing must be done manually.

    Automatic Valve

    • Requires an electrical source to operate (requires a normal 2 pin or 3 pins plug)
    • Can be set to automatically backwash the vessel, with either fleck or digital time.
    • Please note the Automatic valve will either be a fleck or digital valve, depending on stock availability. A manual for programming the valve head will be provided with the unit.

Additional Options: Pressure Gauges, Flow Meter (Rotameter), and By-pass piping Combination Options

There are a number of different fittings and additions that can be added to the Filttration Vessel System, including a By-pass, Inlet and outlet Pressure Gauges, as well as a 250-2500LPH Flowmeter (Rotatmeter).

These additions can be added separately or in a number of combinations with one another. Please see below for information on the different fitting options.

*Please note that the picture above is just to illustrate an example of the pipe work used for a fitting combination setup, depending of the system type and the fitting options selected the pipe work on your system will likely appear different.

**Please note that these additional fitting combinations are built to order, and construction time is 2 to 3 working days from when payment has been received.

    By-Pass Piping

Adding a bypass to the system allows you to divert the flow of water around the system if you need to conduct maintenance on the system.

    Inlet and Outlet Pressure Gauges

Inlet Pressure Gauge allows you to monitor the pressure of the incoming source water Pressure. This will give you an indication that your water pressure is above the 6 bar maximum rating for the housings, in which case you can then install a pressure regulating valve before the filter system.

The Inlet Pressure gauge will also help to indicate whether the incoming source water pressure is too low, in which case a pressure pump can be added before the filter system.

Using an Outlet Pressure Gauge in combination with the inlet pressure gauge will give you an indication of the change in pressure (pressure “drop”) from before to after the filter system.

This will also allow you to see if and when the filters are starting to block up, indicated by a big change between the inlet and outlet pressure levels. Assisting you in knowing when to replace the filter cartridges inside.

Flow Meter (Rotameter) 250 to 2500LPH

The Flow Meter (Rotameter) allows you to see how much draw (flow rate) is growing through the filter system at a particular time and helps to give you an idea of how many litres per hour (LPH) you are using at a given time. For Example, flow rate (LPH) in a household when one versus two showers are running.

    PVC Threaded and Glue Fittings

PVC(Polyvinyl chloride) fittings are used to connect sections of pipes or tubes, adapt to different sizes or shapes, and controlling the flow of water. There are two predominant types of PVC fittings namely PVC Glue Fittings and PVC Threaded Fittings. The difference between the two is that PVC Glue Fittings result in permanent joints and PVC Threaded Fittings are semi-permanent and can be replaced. PVC Glue fittings are joined with primer and cement- a chemical solvent that melts the surface of the PVC and then quickly re-hardens to fuse the pieces together. This results in an airtight, leak-proof bond similar to what you get with welding metal. An example of such a fitting is a PVC Glue Reducing Socket which is used to join together two pieces of PVC pipes with different diameters. Another example would be a  90 Degree Elbow which is used to connect two pipes of the same diameter at an angle of 90 degrees.PVC Threaded fittings utilise a simple threaded connection whereby replaceable 'male threaded' are screwed into 'female threaded'.Male threads have a thread on the outside of the fitting and female threads have a thread on the inside. When you thread the fitting in, it compresses against the other threads.PTFE tape is used to thread these together and the proper way to assemble threaded fittings is to finger tighten, then add one to two turns but no more. An example of a threaded fitting is a Reducing Nipple Male Threaded which is used to connect between two female threads of different diameters.
