Under The Counter Reverse Osmosis (RO) System -Click For More Info

The most popular under counter water filtration solution. The Domestic RO has a capacity of 100 Gallons per day (380 Lt/day).

Under-Counter Reverse Osmosis (RO) System

The Reverse Osmosis (RO) system is one of the most complete under the counter systems available. It has the ability to eliminate up to 99.8% of harmful contaminants in water such as bacteria, viruses, lead, radium, chlorine and arsenic. It makes use of a multi-stage filtration technology.

With the RO system, you can be rest assured that your drinking water is clean, clear and healthy.

Benefits:

  • Maintenance is easy and low cost

  • Filtered water tastes and smells great.

  • Promotes a healthy lifestyle

  • Hidden away out of sight, only a chrome tap is visible

  • No Electricity needed

  • Removes 99.8% of all contaminants in water

  • Flushing of the membrane is done Automatically

  • The low mineral content water is great for detoxifying your body

  • The low mineral content water helps to prevent and dissolve kidney stones

  • Delivers up to 380 Liters (100 Gallons) of filtered water per day

Keep in mind:

  • The system has a water wastage rate of up to 4:1 due to constant flushing of the membrane, so for every 1 Liter of clean, filtered water produced, up to 4 liters will be used to flush the system.

  • The RO System removes 99.8% of the minerals from water, including those that are good for you. However, a mineral injector can be added to the system to replace some of the minerals if this is of serious concern.

  • An important thing to remember before installing any filtration systems is to check which pipe under the counter is bringing the water to the tap and what size the source piping is. The standard household piping size is normally 1/2" (12.7mm) or 3/4" (19mm) thick. Some older houses have copper piping size instead of a newer system and in such cases special attachment will be required to install the RO to the copper piping. In order to ensure that you do not have to buy additional adapters due the connections not matching the piping, please check what type and size your piping is before ordering a filtration system.

  • A hole will have to be drilled into the counter or table where the RO tap will be placed.

  • The filters all have a certian life span and must be replaced to ensure that the system works effectively, specifically the Sediment filter, Granular Activated Carbon, Carbon Block and T33 Carbon (Taste & Odour Filter) which must be replaced every 6 months.

  •  The RO system requires a water pressure of between 3 - 6 bars (50 - 100 psi) to operate. If your water pressure is lower than 3 bars (-50psi), we recommend that you consider the RO system with the booster pump. If your water pressure is above 6 bars (+ 100psi), we recommend that you also install a Pressure Regulator. Otherwise the system will be damaged.

  • If the source water contains bacteria it may start to grow on the membrane and biofouling may occur.

How does it work?

The RO system has 5 stages and is connected to a single point in the household (for example the kitchen). The water flows from the water source (normally the same source pipe as the standard tap), through the 5 stage system and then pure water is available from RO's elegant chrome tap. Below are 2 illustrations describing the process involved in the RO system.

Below is an outline of each filter and what exactly it removes from the water.

Installation in Pretoria or Johannesburg

We have an agreement with a 3rd party plumbing company for fixed priced installations for standard installations. This allows us to offer installation as an option via our online store. This should cover most situations but as it is a 3rd party company that will be performing the actual installation of your system if additional work or parts are required the installer will have to be paid for this directly.

Please ensure that you have read through the description in detail and that you have selected the correct product options for your situation as the plumbers would only be able to advise you on installation and not on the filters themselves.

If you have a marble or granite counter top please select the additional option if you want to faucet mounted in the counter top.

Possible Concerns or Issues that might affect pricing of the installation

  • Insufficient Space for the system
  • Not enough pipe
  • Rotten Cupboards
  • Incorrect Pipe Sizes for the supply connector selected
  • Old Pipes/ connections
  • Electricity and water supply needs to be easily accessible.
  • Over pressure and didn’t select a protection valve (will then need buy a Pressure Protection Valve at extra cost)

Note however that 90% of our clients normally do a DIY Installations and the kits are designed with that in mind.

Additional Options:

Mineral Injector:

The mineral injector helps to replace some of the minerals lost during the Reverse Osmosis (RO) process. The Mineral injector is filled with small beads of mineral, as the water passes through the mineral injector small amounts of minerals breaks away from the beads and are carried with the water. Our mineral injectors inserts traces of potassium, calcium, magnesium, germanium and iron.

  • Potassium: Potassium is vitally important for the functioning of all the cells in the body, especially in the maintenance of neurons (nerve and brain cell). It is also an essential micro nutrient that - together with sodium, chlorine, magnesium and calcium - plays an important roll in maintaining the body's electrolyte balance.
  • Calcium: All the muscles, bones and cells in the body require calcium to function. Calcium is also needed to facilitate the growth and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth.
  • Magnesium: Magnesium improves the function of the mucles, heart and kidneys, by promoting the circulation of blood in the body. It helps to strengthen bones and teeth.
  • Germanium: Germanium is a plant-based mineral that has the property of being toxic to bacteria, but harmless to humans and animals. When ingested, it has also been found to stimulate metabolism of the body. It also has the ability to absorb heavy metals and impurities from water.
  • Iron: Iron is one of the main components of hemoglobin, the substance that enables your red blood cells to transport oxygen around your body. It is also part of myoglobin, which enables mucles to store oxygen that is used for cellular respiration.
  • The Mineral injector has a life span of 12 months (1 Year) and then it will need to be raplaced.

Pressure Reducing Valve:

The system and its housings are rated for a maximum pressure of 6 bars, higher than that and the housing will crack or "bulge". If you have very high water pressure or you know that your source pressure is prone to sudden pressure spikes then it is strongly recommend that you get a pressure reducing valve.

The Pressure reducing valve will keep the incoming pressure from exceeding 6 bar and so prevent the unit from being damaged.

Leak Detector:

The Leak detector is installed on to the under the counter unit, and serves to protect against damage that may be cause by any leakage of the filter system.

The leak detector will cut off the source water if there are any leaks coming from the main unit.

Keep in mind that the leak detector will not stop leaks from the unit's source connector and faucet.

Premium KDF instead of Carbon filters:

Changing the Carbon filters for Premium KDF filters will change the maintenance of the Carbon filters to every 24 months, thus only the 1st and the 5th filter will need to be changed every 6 months.

If you have bacteria in your source water:

If the bacteria builds up in the system, it will result in biofouling of the membrane, this will then result in getting worse water out of the filter system than you actually had before. Therefore we highly recommend changing the system into a double barrier system if you suspect that you have bacteria in your source water. This can be done by replacing the second filter (GAC) with a Premium KDF that will prevent a build up of bacteria in the filter. We then add a pysical barrier to bacteria by replacing the third filter (The Carbon Block) with a Ultra Filtration Cartridge. This filter will need to be changed once a year but will greatly improve the systems ability to handle contaminated source water at a fraction of the cost of a custom small industrial system.

 Ultra Violet (UV) Light Filter:

The RO membrane will remove bacteria and viruses from the water, however once the water has passed the RO membrane, there is nothing to stop any bacteria that may be inside the tank, or could possibly find their way in to the piping after the RO membrane. So for additional peace of mind that all the bacteria and viruses have been removed, you can have a Ultra Violet (UV) Light filter added to the RO system. The UV light would be just before the tap, and would just ensure that any bacteria or viruses that may have entered after the RO membrane are killed. The 10 Watt stainless Steel UV light with its own power source.

  • The UV light's Bulb has a life span of One Year.
  • Keep in mind that the UV light addition will require an electrical source in order to operate.
  • The 10 watt UV Bulb would be R 450.00 to replace.

Larger RO Tank:

The RO system comes standard with an 8 - 12 Liter RO tank, which means that when you open the RO's tap, you will get 8 - 12 Liters at one go then the tank will have to refill itself. If you require more than 8 - 12 liters at a single time when you open the tap, then there is an option of having a larger tank on the system. There are 3 larger size tanks available: 19 Liters, 40 Liters, and 72 Liters.

Inline Water Chiller:

The Inline Water Chiller provides up to 12 LPH of water at under 10oc. This is ideal for an entertainment area or a situation where the water is too hot coming from the filter system.

Water Alkalizer:

One of the more complicated things to change and manage in water is pH. Our bodies want to maintain a pH of 7.8. So if we consume food or drink with a lower pH such as something very acidic (pH less than 7 is an acid) like a sparkling cold drink we have to use some of our reserves of calcium from our bones to maintain a steady pH level.

Water in general isn't one of the major contributors as normally water has a very low buffer. Buffer is how easily the solutions pH is changed. However water is very often a relatively low pH such as 5 due to CO2 from the atmosphere being absorbed.

The water alkalizer aims to address this problem by slowly dissolving minerals into the water that acts as a buffer and increases the pH. It will vary with flow rate but the aim is to get Reverse Osmosis (RO) water to a pH of over 8. This will eliminate the contribution of water to an acidic diet as the water will not be alkaline.

Chilling and Heating options

Are you looking to have your filtered water chilled and heated then there are several options available:

Plumbed in water dispenser

We have several variations of plumbed in water dispensers avaliable, all of which can be connected directly up to the filter system allowing you to chill and heat the filtered water.

Ideal for office, commercial and domestic situations.

You can find more information on the plumbed in water dispensers at the following link.
